Welcome to Year 1.

In Year 1 we are the beginning of Key Stage 1, however in the first term we link closely with the Reception classes to ensure a smooth transition.

In our classrooms you will find an interactive whiteboard and an exciting and stimulating book corner. We also try and incorporate lots of learning outside, making full use of the Forest School.

You will find all adults busy learning with the children inside and outside the classroom.

In Year 1 we do a lot of work to support the children in reading. Phonics is taught daily which helps the children to read. The children take a reading book home each week. We ask the children to read at home as well as at school to ensure the children can do the best that they can.

We do lots of exciting topics in Year 1:

In the Autumn term we start with ‘Through the Key Hole’ which looks at homes and how they have changed. In the second half term we do ‘A Star is Born’ where we look at the nativity and complete our fabulous production.

In the Spring Term we start with a Toy’s Story which the children love. We invited parent in to make puppets with the children. It was a really fun day and the feedback from parents was brilliant. During the second half of the term we complete work Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. During this topic we try and complete lots of problem solving activities and this year designed and made a sandwich.

In the Summer Term we look at the traditional story Jack and the Beanstalk. This is a lovely time where we focus on the outdoors and growing. Finally we look at Trains, Planes and Automobiles.

Overall a very exciting year with lots of opportunity to learn!
